MMM: Building Communities and Public Infrastructure for Canada and the World

From its beginnings as a surveying company in the early 1950s, MMM Group Limited (MMM) has grown into a global project management and delivery firm with over 1,800 employees, offering comprehensive planning, engineering and geomatics services to government and private sector clients across Canada and overseas.

Today, MMM is an industry leader in program/project management and the provision of multidisciplinary services for large scale, complex projects, whether fully serviced communities or international airports.

The firm’s philosophy is to provide individualized, customized service to each client, recognizing that no two projects are alike. Senior staff, who are recognized leaders in their field, work closely with the industry’s best and brightest new graduates, combining experience with the latest electronic tools and design practices.

The firm’s operating divisions and their principal fields of activity follow.

INFRASTRUCTURE & ENVIRONMENT

MMM’s Infrastructure and Environmental Division comprises the Municipal Design, Water Resources, Environmental Management, Planning and Environmental Design, Landscape Architecture and Urban Design, and Contract Administration departments. The firm's Durham Regional Office is also part of this division.

Municipal Design provides a full range of services required for land development, including mapping; land use planning; preparation of site plans; preliminary engineering and detailed design of municipal services, including water and sewage treatment plants; water distribution and sewage collection systems; transportation and environmental planning, and contract administration during construction. Typical projects include the Cornell and Bayview Glen communities.

The Water Resources Department is involved in stormwater management; flood prediction, protection and control; watershed management planning; flow modelling, routing and control.

The Environment Management Department is involved in solid and hazardous waste management, site decontamination, environmental site assessments, biological studies, and hydrogeological studies/designs. This department provides environmental planning, including the preparation of formal environmental assessment documents under Provincial and Federal legislation.

The Planning and Environmental Design Department offers a wide range of services in municipal planning and land development. Planners develop community plans, as well as strategic planning policy. The group also designs plans of subdivision, plans of condominium and site plans, coordinates public and agency consultation, and successfully manages the development approvals process.

The Landscape Architecture and Urban Design Department assists both public and private sector clients in the creation of unique and liveable spaces. Parks, trails, streetscape, natural areas and people places top the list of the Division’s design expertise.

The Contract Administration Department provides a range of construction phase services for projects designed by the firm or by others. These services include coordination of construction, surveys, quality control, inspection, payment processing, cost control, dispute resolution and commissioning.

TRANSPORTATION

The firm's multidisciplinary team of transportation specialists provides the full range of planning and engineering services required to develop effective solutions to moving people and goods by all modes. MMM’s extensive domestic and international experience serves as a solid base for the development of feasible, cost-effective approaches to the full spectrum of transportation needs.

Transportation Planning offers the planning and engineering services required to develop comprehensive solutions to the full spectrum of transportation challenges. Two skill sets are central to the services offered. The first is technical expertise in transportation planning, traffic engineering, parking policy and design, planning for alternative modes, environmental assessment and preliminary design. The second key area of expertise is project management. MMM’s transportation specialists are committed to a pro-active management approach, to assist clients in meeting their objectives. MMM's highly regarded team of transportation project managers is working on LRT projects in Vancouver, Toronto and Trinidad.

Transportation Engineering provides expertise in feasibility studies, value engineering, functional planning, preliminary and detailed design, construction services, environmental assessment and project management, for toll roads, highways, arterial and municipal roads. Major highway projects include Toronto's Highway 407 and Edmonton's Anthony Henday Ring Road. Current projects include Toronto Pearson International Airport's $4.4 billion redevelopment program and a new airport in Quito, Ecuador.

The Airport Group’s services include demand/capacity forecasting, airport conceptual and master planning, airside/landside detailed engineering and architectural design, security, value engineering, project management and construction administration services, special terminal and airfield equipment procurement, navigational and visual aid planning and design and economic planning for industrial benefits analyses.

MMM's Rail Facilities Group has experience on a number and variety of railroad projects. These range from light rail transit projects for which we are providing program management services to heavy rail projects like the GO Train Rail Infrastructure Project (GO TRIP) for which we are program managers (with Giffels and Acres) and the proposed Detroit River Tunnel, for which we provided environmental assessment, planning and engineering services. Other projects include rail/rail and rail/road grade separations, rail corridor investigations and railway lands development.

FACILITY DEVELOPMENT

The Facility Development Division provides project management and structural engineering services to government and private sector clients. Professional and technical staff combine their talents to develop the most effective ways of meeting client needs. The services offered include all phases of project development from feasibility studies through design and full construction phase services, including commissioning.

The firm’s Project Management expertise is well-known in the development industry, with major projects under management for public and private sector clients. Services range from opportunity identification and development to full program management of multi-billion dollar land development, transportation and facility projects.

MMM’s Structural Engineering department provides services for office buildings, hospitals, airports, hotels, shopping centers, sports, recreational and entertainment facilities, schools and universities, as well as bridges, sewage and water treatment facilities, earth retaining structures and dams, tunnels, land development projects and special use structures. Condition inspections are an important service provided by this department.

MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

MMM's Mechanical & Electrical Division provides a full range of mechanical and electrical engineering services.

The mechanical engineering services include heating, ventilating and air conditioning; energy management; fire protection and smoke control; plumbing and drainage; computer room services; refrigeration systems; energy audits; boiler plants; district heating service; and pollution control.

The electrical engineering services include power generation and distribution; life safety systems; load distribution and control systems; security and IT; CCTV, communication and sound systems; lighting; traffic management and energy audits.

With the acquisition of Rybka Smith and Ginsler (RSG), a highly regarded firm in the fields of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, MMM has greatly increased its strength in these disciplines, with over 125 professional and technical staff and significant capability in all building fields, with particular emphasis in the health care, hospitality and airport fields. The Mechanical and Electrical division undertakes major projects in the health care and hospitality fields, across Canada and internationally.

GEOMATICS

MMM provides a full range of geomatics services, including surveying and mapping, geographic information systems, global positioning systems, photogrammetry and hydrographic surveys. The firm's Geomatics Division employs more than 110 land surveyors, hydrographers, photogrammetrists, geodesists and information specialists, with national and international experience. Our pool of skilled office and field personnel is supported by the resources of modern instrumentation and state-of-the-art software, some of which has been developed in-house.

Information Systems are changing the way the world stores and manages geographic-related information. MMM uses its specialized knowledge to adapt IS for unique geomatics solutions. Using the latest in digital and Soft Copy techniques, MMM provides mapping, ortho-imagery and map maintenance services locally, throughout Canada and abroad. Land information systems are replacing traditional land registry office paper document systems. The firm was a pioneer in the conversion of land registry information from paper-based records to digital information as a partner in the POLARIS (now Teranet) project.

Legal and Canada Lands surveys are provided in Ontario and Alberta respectively through MMM Geomatics Ontario Limited and MMM Geomatics Alberta Limited. MMM makes extensive use of global positioning systems (GPS) in their surveying practices across Canada.

The firms also provide hydrographic and bathymetric surveying services on inshore and near offshore waters. Representative projects include the surveys of the Mackenzie River near Norman Wells to support the construction of artificial islands for drilling purposes, offshore surveys in the Beaufort Sea to support oil and gas exploration, detailed water crossings for pipeline installations and updated harbour surveys.

MMM GROUP INTERNATIONAL INC.

MMM has been providing services to international clients in more than 40 countries for over 35 years. The firm has worked extensively in the Middle East, the Caribbean, Latin America, Africa, East and South East Asia and Europe.

Services provided range from transportation, including airports, roads and ports, to environmental engineering, including water supply, wastewater treatment and solid waste management. Services also include water resource management, geomatics, facility development and institutional strengthening in environmental programs. In recent years MMM has become increasingly involved in privately financed airport developments in Canada and a number of countries overseas. The firm is building on that experience to develop privatization projects in other fields such as ports, water supply and wastewater treatment.
