MMM: Building Communities and Public Infrastructure for Canada and the World
Overview
From its beginnings as a surveying company in the early 1950s, MMM Group Limited (MMM) has grown into a global project management and delivery firm with over 1,600 employees, offering comprehensive planning, engineering and geomatics services to government and private sector clients across Canada and overseas.
Today, MMM is an industry leader in program/project management and the provision of multidisciplinary services for large-scale, complex projects, whether fully serviced communities or international airports.
The firm's philosophy is to provide individualized, customized service to each client, recognizing that no two projects are alike. Senior staff, who are recognized leaders in their field, work closely with the industry's best and brightest new graduates, combining experience with the very latest electronic tools and design practices.
MMM has partnered with major Canadian and international contractors for foreign projects and also enjoys strong relationships with major financial firms in Canada and abroad, including its investment partner, Perseis Partners Inc.
MMM History
The history of MMM dates back to the early 1950s, when an engineering professor from the University of Toronto, Harold Macklin, was recruited by his colleague Oscar Marshall to provide surveys for the Imperial Oil Company for a pipeline. The project was a success, and the two men formed a partnership that same year that would become the nucleus of one of Canada's most renowned engineering and consulting companies.
A year after the pipeline project, a third partner, University of Saskatchewan graduate Pat Monaghan, was recruited to join the company as a partner. Marshall Macklin Monaghan was born.
In 1955, MMM was hired by the Western Electric Corporation to provide astronomic determinations for the Distant Early Warning or DEW Line. The DEW Line is an integrated chain of 63 radar and communications systems stretching 3,000 miles across northern Canada and Alaska.
In 1956, the company began providing surveys and engineering for the town of Elliot Lake , and urban development for the Don Mills suburb in Toronto. Throughout the late 1950s, the company continued to grow, adding staff and professional services to become one of Ontario's largest, privately-owned consulting engineering firms.
In addition to servicing its Canadian clients, MMM began pursuing opportunities in the 1960s to work in other countries, and has been active internationally since then. Long before the era of free trade and the global economy, MMM put Canada on the world map with its professional surveying, engineering and consulting services. Thanks to the dedicated work of many talented people, working at home and abroad, the company occupies a special place in the hearts and minds of customers throughout North and South America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Australia.
To maintain its edge in the engineering and consulting field, the company founders put a high premium on recruitment, hiring the brightest and most talented students to fill an ever-expanding roster of positions at the company.
The company founders also sought out candidates who were community-minded and well-rounded, and who brought a variety of skills to the job. This tradition continues to this day, helping MMM to attract the industry's best and brightest new graduates.
